Swaraj Division of Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. Unveils and dedicates the Deming Prize to the Government of Punjab

Chandigarh: The Swaraj division of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M), Farm Equipment Sector (FES), a part of the USD 15.9 billion Mahindra Group unveiled the prestigious Deming Application Prize for 2012 at a function in Chandigarh and dedicated to the people of Punjab The Deming Prize has been awarded by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE). Mr. Bishwambhar Mishra, Chief Executive, Tractor & Farm Mechanization Business, Farm Equipment Sector, had received the Deming Prize on behalf of the Swaraj Division on November 14, 2012 in Tokyo, Japan.On this occasion Mr. Bishwambhar Mishra unveiled a replica of the Deming medal to acknowledge the contribution made by Swaraj employees, local suppliers and the support received from the Government of Punjab on the journey towards this glorious achievement.Commenting on this development, Mr. Mishra, said, “This is a moment of great joy and satisfaction and is the culmination of our collective dream and shared vision, achieved with immense hard work by each employee. Deming award for quality is equivalent to receiving an Oscar award for a movie, which is given to an organization for making positive impact to all business stakeholders and society at large. Swaraj’s focus on quality with an eye on overall business excellence has made us win this coveted award.”
It is a momentous event for the Indian tractor industry that Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.’s Farm Equipment Sector is the first tractor company in the world to win the Deming prize for both its tractor brands Mahindra and Swaraj. Mahindra Tractors was the first tractor brand in the world to win the prestigious Deming Prize in 2003, and now Swaraj has made us proud by being the second tractor brand to have won the Deming Prize.
About the Deming Prize:The Deming Prize is one of the highest awards of TQM (Total Quality Management) in the world. It was established in 1951 in commemoration of the late Dr. William Edwards Deming who contributed greatly to Japan’s rise as a country of the highest quality standards and mindset, and its achievement of producing top quality goods in a short span of time after World War II. It is given to those organizations that have made outstanding contributions to quality improvement and customer satisfaction by using the Total Quality Management process.
About Swaraj:In 1970, the Government of Punjab acquired Swaraj tractor's design and established Punjab Tractors Limited (PTL). The tractors were produced and sold under the brand name ‘Swaraj’. In 2007, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. acquired a majority stake in PTL, and in February 2009, it was merged into M&M as the Swaraj Division of Mahindra & Mahindra.
