Chandigarh: 16 Dec 2012  /A rich  floral tribute was paid to the martyrs during a solemn wreath Laying ceremony to commemorate Vijay Diwas at Western Command War Memorial where Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra , GOC-in-C , Western Command and General (Retd) VP Malik,  ex-Chief of Army Staff laid wreath .Many other gallantry award winner War Veterans from this tricity ,inmates from PRC, Mohali serving officers ,Jawans also paid tribute to the martyrs.Later during a high tea Army Commander ,Gen VP Malik and other senior officers interacted with Jawans and Paraplegic Jawans and greeted them.  This day is celebrated every year to commemorate the spectacular victory achieved by the Indian Armed Forces over Pakistani forces on both the Eastern as well as Western Fronts during Bangladesh Liberation  War, which was fought from 3-16 December .Over 90,000 Pakistani troops surrendered to Indian Forces which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.In the evening, a Candle Lighting Ceremony was also held at the Veer Smriti. Approximately 500 officers, JCOs and other ranks and their families participated in the event.
