Over 1000 students taken to Sukhna Lake to watch migratory birds

December 5: Today, 50 students of Government Model Sr. Sec. School, Timber Market, Sector 26, visited the regulator end of Sukhna Lake on the last day of 15 days long ‘Bird Watching Trips’ for School children organized by Department of Forests, Chandigarh Administration in collaboration with Yuvsatta-an NGO.
On the occasion Santosh Kumar, Conservator of Forests, Chandigarh Administration shared that in the last 15 days they had organized such visits for different Government & Private Schools of the city and over 1000 young children were sensitized through this programme about the important role Birds play, as birds provide critical links within the vast food chains and webs that exist in our ecosystem.He further said that the annual migration of hundreds of migratory birds to Sukhna Lake is one of the nature’s most energetic and awe-inspiring phenomenons. And over the years there Department had made adequate arrangements for the birds to thrive and grow.Sarbjeet Kaur a resource person for the programme from Yuvsatta said that students today saw many beautiful birds like Ruddy Shelduck, Black winged stilts, Eagrets, Eurasian coot, Common Teal, Northern Shoveler, Toughted & Common pochard, Purple & Heron Grey etc.
